Getting to Know Canvas
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of the District’s technology usage plan to help prepare students for the ever changing technology advances, the District purchased a learning management system called Canvas. Canvas is a cloud-based tool that allows teachers and students to create and share content from any web-enabled mobile device. Canvas allows us to provide access for students beyond the classroom walls. Canvas provides the platform for students to participate in assignments, assessments, and discussion from anywhere and provides the safety and security. We also believe that the Canvas platform can provide additional opportunities for parents to learn more about classroom activities and assignments. Canvas provides a parent portal that will allow parents to preview course work, grades and assignments. A Parent’s Guide: Getting to Know Canvas is included.
It is important to note that the Canvas learning management system usage varies across the district. Early elementary teachers will be using Canvas as a portal to display important links and learning tools. Upper elementary students will use canvas as a homepage for curriculum and a portal for some assignment completion. The middle and high school will use Canvas as a home page, portal for assignments, quizzes/tests, student feedback and organizing classroom content.
Also, please note that teachers use both Canvas and Power School to record grades. Therefore, grading differences may exist when looking at both systems. Grades posted in Canvas may be delayed in getting into the Power School Grade book.
We hope that Canvas will provide another avenue for home school communication with students and parents. Thank you for your patience and support as we learn how to apply all that Canvas offers to our students, parents and staff.
